What is Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6, in simple words, is the super-fast internet connection you have been waiting for! Wi-Fi 6 also known as “AX WiFi” or “802.11ax WiFi” is the next-generation wireless internet connection that has been developed as the successor of the current Wi-Fi 5 version. Wi-Fi 6 not only provides a faster internet connection but also ensures better connectivity in cases where multiple devices are connected to the same network. What is the speed of Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6 has a maximum speed of 9.6 Gbps which is many times higher than Wi-Fi 5 (3.5 Gbps). Its massive increase in throughput is attributed to the introduction of two new technologies: MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple Input, Multiple Output), and OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access). 

MU-MIMO technology is commonly seen in the present modems/routers and antennas and allows transmitting and receiving signals from multiple devices at the same time. At present, MIMO routers communicate with four devices at a given time, while Wi-Fi 6 will allow communication of up to eight devices at any given time. OFDMA is another technology that also works on improving connectivity to multiple devices at the same time. This technology employs a number of subcarriers to transmit data instead of the traditional method of using a single carrier frequency modulated by AM/FM. This improves the stability of the connection and wider network coverage. Wi-Fi 6 also employs 1024-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) which increases the amount of data packed into a signal. The 1024-QAM improves the spectral efficiency which results in a reliable, high-speed internet connection to the individual user.

Wi-Fi 6 is also known to reduce the battery usage of your device, due to a feature called the “target wake time”. This feature enables the router to schedule check-in times with the device. With a faster internet connection, like Wi-Fi 6, the time required for your device to stay active to receive or send data substantially reduces compared to Wi-Fi 5. Therefore, this reduces the battery consumption of your device and improves battery health in the long run.
